Township of Arthurs Seat

Arthurs Seat marks the highest point of the Mornington Peninsula. At 302 metres it not only provides panoramic views of Port Phillip Bay from its many lookouts and rural roads, but a wealth of things to do within a five minute walk of the summit.

The 304 metre peak was named by Lt Murray in 1802 after a similar landform near Edinburgh. From the earliest days of settlement in the area Arthurs Seat was a regular recreational outing. Such was its popularity that an intriguing development `Hollywood Garden of the Moon', was erected at the summit in the 1930s, recreating a similar facility in California.

The complex included swimming pool, lounges, hotel and beer garden. The semi-Deco style of building evident at the summit reflects the opulence and exuberance of the times. Ferries brought visitors to Dromana, who then took buses up the Arthurs Seat Tourist Road.

In and around Arthurs Seat a wide range of attractions exist to entertain the visitor, including the diverse Arthurs Seat State Park and 34 hectare Seawinds Gardens.
