SOMERVILLE This town on the gently undulating Moorooduc Plains was once the centre of Victoria's fruit growing industry, but has now assumed a distinctly residential atmosphere. The beginnings of development date from 1859. The annual Somerville Fruit Growing Shows were a major social activity by 1900. As late as 1967 apple packing was taught as a subject in local schools. Fruit growing declined as an industry from the 1960s, but some large orchards still operate within the district. |
