Peninsula Visitors Guide, Summer 2015, Page 014 (transcription)

VISITORS14 The Visitor is 25 years old and this edition is about as far removed from our first in 1989 as today s Peninsula tourism is from the place it was 25 years ago.
In many ways things have changeddramatically.
In those days the Peninsula was all about sand, sea and good old fashioned family fun.
The region still offers those traditional fun elements in bucketsfull, but during the past25 years the experience has beengradually and substantially transformedby the wine industry, fine dining, unique accommodation and first classgolf courses.
We now have a much more sophisticated and year round tourism product witnessour success at state and national tourism awards with much greater depth.
However the industry is still underpinnedby family owned and operated businesses, many of which are now in their second and third generation We are lucky as a region to have escaped the heavy handedness of big business that has takenover the tourism and hospitality in some areasclose to Melbourne.
Most of our owners can be seen on the job at the coalface behind the bar, in the garden, collecting tickets, in the kitchen and making wine.
They are not anonymouscorporates but people with a dream, passion andvision.
Yes we certainly have an enviable blend of water, hills, bush, art, food, wine and attractions, but our biggest asset is our operators.
Long after your holiday photos have faded it is usually the people that you met whoprovide you with the lasting memories.
In 1989 the first issue was produced as a 2colour tabloid magazine with colour covers andcentrespread but just 28 pages inside.
In 1992 weintroduced Peninsula Wine Country as a run on for Melbourne distribution and in 1995 moved to more colour and gloss covers.
We shrank to the handier A4 size in 1997 and at the same time introduced the sister publication Peninsula Wine Country Annual.
Full gloss colour throughout the publications was introduced in 1998 and we startedthe online versions of the magazines that same yearat www.visitor.com.au Leading the way again this year inthis 25th Birthday edition we arelaunching our own custom designedSmartPage App which will makes integrated information dispersal afast and effective reality and brings our magazines to life with video andpodcast, push alerts for news and specialoffers and this is all to keep pace with you our readers.
On behalf of all our tourism operators we wish you and yours a veryhappy summer and many happy returns Mary and Arthur A special thankyou to Hartley Higgins of Reliance Press whose vision and enthusiasm for the Peninsula was inspirational.
Many thanks alsoto Tim Bracher whose carefully crafted words have often filled the pages of the Visitor over the years.
