The result has been very low crops with some blocks producing only 20 to 30 their normal yield.
At Paringa Pinot Noir, in particular clone MV6 has been most affected, while our later flowering Shiraz seems to have been least affected with close to average yields.
The last season that we saw similar low crops was 2002 again because of record low spring temperatures.
Winemaker Lindsay McCall being philosophical said we are farmers working with nature and things don t always go to plan.
Since our last similar vintage in 2002 we ve had a string of great vintages with the Mornington Peninsula rarely being affected by catastrophic weather events.
You only have to consider the sustained droughts suffered by many farmers through NSW QLD to realise that our one season low yield problem, pale into insignificance Warm dry conditions through February and early March has seen our fruit ripening very well.
Our first picking day was the 21st February which was very similar to 2013.
So far we have processed 25 tonnes of Pinot with the wines colour, aromas and flavours suggesting great quality said winemaker Lindsay McCall.
While we are yet to pick any chardonnay, the quality of fruit in the vineyards appears very very good, albeit with reduced yields.
The Shiraz, which is not normally harvested till mid-April and still has a few weeks of ripening to go is looking really good at this stage fingers crossed.
VINTAGE 2014 at Paringa The 2014 Winemaking team standing in front of the wineries latest addition 3 new wooden Foundreries wooden Fermenters .
While wooden fermenters are common in the old world in places such as Burgundy they are not widely used in the new world where stainless steel is mostly used.
There is something special about the insulation qualities of French oak with fermenting wine and the interaction between the wood and the must wine said winemaker Lindsay McCall.
It will be exciting to see the results he said.
