ART PARADE ExhIBITIOnS AT WhISTlEWOOD Over the last 60 years, Whistlewood, a small hilltop 1870s weatherboardcottage at Shoreham has hostedsome of the most famous names in Australian and international arts world.
It has been both home and work base of the McCulloch familysince 1951 when founding director ofthe Mornington Peninsula RegionalGallery director, critic and author the late Alan McCulloch AO and his family bought the house on their returnto Australia following an extensive overseas sojourn.
Doubling as a writing, consultancyand publishing headquarters as wellas home, Whistlewood has been owned by McCulloch s daughter, writer, critic and consultant Susan McCulloch OAM and her daughter, writer, curator and researcher Emily McCulloch Childs for the last 20 years.
Base of the major referencebooks McCulloch s Encyclopedia of Australian Art and McCullochs Contemporary Aboriginal Art the complete guide, Whistlewood has also long been an art consultancy andexhibition space, open at select timesand for exhibitions of Aboriginal art that the McCullochs select from arts centres throughout Australia.
We work with more than 40 Aboriginal arts centres regularly, and have access to a huge range ofart, says Susan McCulloch.
Our exhibitions usually comprise morethan 70 works including barks, carvings and other sculptures, andochre works as well as colourful acrylics from desert regions.
In order to show the full range, McCulloch has devised an Art Parade in which works are paraded by a team of assistants as she providescommentary on the art and artists.
An Autumn Salon at Easter will feature one such parade on EasterSaturday with works on show fromSaturday to Monday April 19 to 22.
This year the McCullochs have also been asked to show a dedicated room of Aboriginal art in the Principal s Lounge at the highly popular fundraising exhibition Art Red Hill at Red Hill Consolidated School, May 2-5.
We love bringing a big variety of Aboriginal art to the Peninsula and itprovides a great opportunity for peopleto see and acq uire art in a great rangeof styles and media that they may nototherwise have access to, she says.
