002 www.visitor.com.au 17 It s true Agricultural Shows are the most popular form of family entertainment in Australia today, and here on the Mornington Peninsula we have one of the best.
Every year thousands of people attend the Red Hill Show to enjoy a great family day and be part of this wonderful community celebration.
In 2008, this Show celebrated the fact that Agricultural and Horticultural Shows have been held on the Mornington Peninsula for 150 years.
When the Show began in 1922, local people exhibited apples, flowers and vegetables along with the best butter, cooking and preserves from home and farm kitchens.
Show Day was declared a local holiday by the Shire of Flinders and a special train ran from Melbourne to bring spectators down to Red Hill, the journey taking over three hours.
Over the years, horses, sheep, cattle and alpacas were included in the Show each new introduction indicating the changing face of farming on the Mornington Peninsula.
More recently wine, avocados, olives, berries and cheese have been added to the list of produce coming from this most acclaimed agricultural and horticultural area, and some of the very best local produce is always available at the Show for tasting and buying.
This iconic event held in March each year is always a family favourite with something for all ages This year the Whip Industries team performed highflying tricks on their KLX110 motorbikes over specially designed jump ramps Tubby the Robot was there and the Stiltwalker delighted the crowds.
The Black Snake Production team spoke about the plight of Australia s disappearing wildlife and gave their audience the opportunity to handle and learn more about each creature and for others the kite making workshop and the Circus demonstrations were great drawcards.
The Futura Kelpies were in action on the main arena and children mingled and patted the Animals from the Move.
And, of course, the excitement of the Woodchop everyone s favourite Record crowds meandered around the Showgrounds to experience the colour and diversity of the stallholders from rock candy to pizzas indigenous plants to fresh apples and pears.
