THE TOWNSHIPS

McCRAE

McCrae is a charming small township with some exceptional features. A lovely beach, fascinating lighthouse, superb scenery and interesting history including the McCrae Homestead (from which it takes its name )

The McCrae Homestead built by Andrew and his wife Georgiana McCrae was from the floor plans she had drawn. Andrew McCrae was born in Edinburgh and studied law. Georgiana was the illegitimate daughter of the 5th Duke of Gordon, who resided at Gordon Castle in Scotland. Born in 1804 she was of rare distinction, spoke French and became a skilled musician. Her true forte was painting water colour miniatures and her personal diary.

McCrae Homestead built on the lower slopes of Arthurs Seat in 1844 is one of the few remaining homes built from local stringy-bark drawn from the top of the mountain.
