As vineyards begin maturing beyond twenty years, the region is producing more quality single vineyard wines. The Pinot Noirs in particular come from outstanding pedigree and feature amongst Australia’s finest. Over many vintages, in a sometimes tricky marginal climate, a clutch of top wines have held their heads high with both consistent quality and individual style. The best demonstrate an undeniable sense of place, refined by many years of rigorous viticulture and winemaking.

Many of the regions oldest vineyards are in the vicinity of Red Hill. Nat White of Main Ridge Estate began making wine sourced from his small vineyard in the early 1970s but after twelve vintages, far greater understanding of his site led him to bottle one wine using Pinot Noir exclusively from his ‘Half Acre’ site. Why throw the best into a blend, he thought, when there are drinkers ready to pay a premium for better quality. The result is an annual tiny parcel of a distinctive Pinot Noir that sells out instantly, mostly to long-established cellar door customers. The Half Acre vineyard was consistently producing outstanding grapes long before its name appeared on the bottle. Performance led to recognition and the consistent style has given the wine a keen following.
